Johnny Hensley formed JOHNNY HENSLEY AND THE RED HOTS®, Augusta's first working rock 'n roll band, in 1958 while at Murphy Junior High School. Within months, each Saturday morning they were playing from the stage of the Imperial Theatre for WDRW radio. After that performance, they would go to WJBF television and play for the Top Ten Dance Party. They would then drive to Savannah, Georgia to the old Manager Hotel and play for the Sol Ratner Dance Party live on WSAV television. THE RED HOTS would then play to a packed house at The Pier on Tybee Island until midnight. They were one of the one of the first bands to tour as the opening act for Conway Twitty.

After retiring in 1977 to pursue real estate, Mr. Hensley regrouped THE RED HOTS® for sold-out reunion concerts at the Imperial Theatre in 1994, 1995 and 1998 (their 40th anniversary concert). All of the profits from each concert were donated to local charities. From 1999 to 2002 JOHNNY HENSLEY AND THE RED HOTS® were again a staple on the Augusta music scene, playing for high school and college reunions, weddings and area events.
